Last year, I began my first year of studies in the field of Actuarial Science at the University of Pretoria. It was an extremely challenging year as it was a major adjustment from high school in terms of the difficulty of the work as well as the volume of the work.
I managed to settle into a routine that allowed me to focus on my studies and make the most of the time that I had available to me. I encountered many challenging modules with the most challenging being mathematical statistics. My first year comprised of 13 modules and I was able to achieve distinctions for 11 of these modules with an overall average of 79% for the year. I was also able to achieve both board exam exemptions for the year.
My free time was drastically reduced from the time that I was in school and as a result, most of my time was dedicated to my studies. I therefore did not play cricket apart from the odd game of backyard cricket with my brother. I did however spend some of my free time in the gym as it enabled me to clear my head and to keep healthy and fit. I also continued my participation in the self defense art of Krav Maga and I was able to grade to level P2 during September. It is my goal to continue with Krav Maga and to reach the level of instructor within the next 3 years.
I was forced to make many sacrifices during the course of last year as my course required the bulk of my time but it was most definitely worth it. I did however, enjoy my first year of campus as well as the freedom and memories that accompanied it. I am going to try to work even harder this year to make it a successful year and to make all of those that have supported me proud.
I would also like to once again thank the Jacques Kallis Foundation for allowing me to build the platform on which I can now proudly stand. I am also extremely grateful to Nolands for supporting me through my tertiary studies and I hope that my achievements this year will make them proud.
